Teaching Hindi Matras to Kids: An Easy Order
Hindi has a logical script: once children know the letters and the matra signs, they can read almost any word. The key is to teach in a steady order and practise a little every day.
Step 1: vowels (स्वर)
Start with the 13 vowels: अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ अं अः. Teach two or three at a time with a picture word for each, like अ for अनार and आ for आम. Say the sound, show the shape, trace it, then write it.
Step 2: consonants (व्यंजन)
Teach consonants in their rows, because letters in a row share a sound family: क ख ग घ ङ, then च छ ज झ ञ, and so on. Two letters a day is a good pace. The letters ङ, ञ and ण are rarely used in words; children only need to recognise them early on.
Step 3: matras, one at a time
A matra is the sign a vowel takes when it joins a consonant. Teach them in this order, because each builds on the last:
1. ा (aa): का, गा, मा
2. ि and ी (i and ee): कि, की. Point out that the short ि comes before the letter.
3. ु and ू (u and oo): कु, कू
4. े and ै (e and ai): के, कै
5. ो and ौ (o and au): को, कौ
6. ं and ः: कं, कः
Spend two or three days on each, practising with ten common consonants.
Step 4: barakhadi
Barakhadi is one consonant with all matras: क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः. Reading it aloud every day fixes the matras in memory.
Step 5: words and sentences
Begin with two- and three-letter words without matras (घर, जल, कमल), then words with one matra (माला, पानी), then short sentences. Read every word aloud before writing it.
Daily practice ideas
- Ten to fifteen minutes of tracing and writing.
- A "letter hunt" in newspapers or signboards.
- Flash cards for matras while travelling.
Common mistakes
- Writing the शिरोरेखा (top line) first, which makes letters cramped. Write the letter, then the line.
- Mixing up ि and ी. Say the short and long sounds clearly.
- Rushing to sentences before matras are steady.
- Practising only writing. Reading aloud every day matters just as much.
Making it fun
Use a small whiteboard, magnetic letters or a tray of sand for the first few letters. Point out letters on shop boards and bus routes, and let your child read the names of sweets and fruits at home. Children remember letters they find in their own world.
