75% Attendance Rule: How Schools and Colleges Track It
Many schools, boards and universities in India require students to attend a minimum share of classes, often 75 percent, to sit for exams. The exact rule and exemptions differ by board and institution, so always read your own institution's rules.
How attendance percentage is calculated
Attendance % = days present ÷ working days × 100
Working days are the days classes were held. Sundays, declared holidays and days the institution was closed do not count. For example, if October had 24 working days and a student was present on 19, attendance is 19 ÷ 24 = 79 percent.
Some institutions count approved medical or sports leave as present; others count it separately. Check how yours treats leave before you calculate.
Why it matters
- Students below the minimum may be stopped from appearing in exams or asked to submit reasons and documents.
- Low attendance is often the first sign of a problem at home, health issues or loss of interest. Catching it early helps.
How teachers can track it every month
1. Keep a register with one column per day and a simple mark: P, A, L, H.
2. At the end of every week, count present and working days for each student.
3. Calculate the percentage and highlight anyone below the minimum.
4. Inform parents in writing when a student drops below the line, not at the end of the term.
A spreadsheet makes this automatic: COUNTIF counts the P marks, and a formula divides by working days.
For students: how many days can you miss?
If a term has 120 working days and the rule is 75 percent, you need at least 90 days present. You can miss 30 days in the whole term, including sick days. Missing ten days in the first month leaves very little room for illness later.
Medical and other exemptions
Many boards and universities allow condonation for genuine medical reasons or official events with proper documents. Keep medical certificates and leave approvals; they are usually needed when the institution reviews shortfalls.
Our Student Attendance Register marks each day from a drop-down, calculates attendance percentage automatically and lists defaulters below the minimum you set.
