How to Make a GST Invoice (Format, Rules and Free Generator)

A proper GST invoice protects you and your customer. It is also what your customer needs to claim input tax credit. Here is everything that must be on it, in plain words.

What a GST tax invoice must show

• Your business name, address and GSTIN
• A unique invoice number (one series per financial year, like INV/26-27/001) and the date
• Customer name and address, and their GSTIN if they are registered
• Place of supply: the customer's state
• For each item: description, HSN or SAC code, quantity, rate and taxable value
• GST rate and tax amount: CGST + SGST or IGST
• The total amount, also written in words
• Signature of the supplier or an authorised person

CGST + SGST or IGST?

If you and your customer are in the same state, split the GST equally: 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. If the customer is in another state, charge the full rate as IGST. Our free GST invoice generator does this automatically from the two states.

Not registered under GST?

You cannot charge GST. Issue a simple bill without tax, and do not write "Tax Invoice" on it. In our generator, leave GSTIN empty and set GST to 0%.
