Nominee Checklist: Make Sure Your Family Can Claim Every Rupee
Indian banks hold tens of thousands of crores in unclaimed deposits. Most of it is not lost: families simply did not know an account existed, or there was no nominee and the claim became slow and painful.
Check these nominees today
- Bank accounts and FDs: since 1 November 2025, banks allow up to 4 nominees per account, and you can split the share.
- Lockers: add a nominee and tell your family which bank and branch.
- Life and health insurance: the nominee should match your current family situation.
- Mutual funds and demat: add a nominee or opt out in writing.
- EPF: do e-nomination on the EPFO portal.
- PPF, NPS and post office schemes: check the nominee on each.
Write down where everything is
Nominees help only if your family knows the account exists. Keep one list of every account, policy, folio and loan, with the bank or company and a helpline number. Note where the papers are kept and who to call: your CA, insurance agent and employer HR.
